Live in Shah Rukh's home: Only Rs 3 lakhs

The star puts his first home up for rent, but for a steep Rs 3 lakh a month.

Long before Mannat became a Mumbai landmark, Shah Rukh Khan was the resident of a rather inconspicuous Bandra apartment. The three bedroom living space on Carter Road, which was the superstar's first purchased property in the city, is now available on rent for a steep Rs 3 lakh a month. Other than the rent, which according to local property dealers is a notch above the usual, the new residents will also have to shell out a deposit of around Rs 15 lakh for the space. The sea-facing flat on the seventh floor of Shree Amrit Apartments features three bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen with modular fittings. If you are hoping to score some SRK memorabilia from the flat you will be disappointed as the space is unfurnished though fully air conditioned.

A property dealer pointed out that he has been inundated with queries about the apartment within a day of it being on the market, thanks to the pull of SRK's moniker, which also hangs on the nameplate outside the apartment. "The rent cheque would be issued in Shah Rukh's name and there are many who are simply excited about living in a house which is owned by the star and used to be his home for a few years," said one of the brokers marketing the property.

The brokers admit that the rent demanded by SRK is hefty as the amount is usually demaded for a much bigger space (4 BHK plus terrace) in the same locality. "For Rs 3 lakh I can offer you a much bigger apartment on a higher floor. But it won't be Shah Rukh's flat," said the broker standing in the lobby of the building pointing at the name plate against flat no 702. A similar apartment in the locality would fetch between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh at best.

The flat was Shah Rukh's first purchased property in the city. Residents of the building revealed that he had moved in after the success of his debut film Deewana. "He used to drive a red Pajero those days. If I am not mistaken his son was born here too," said a resident of the building.

Sources revealed that he stayed in the flat for a few years before buying a heritage bungalow on Bandstand and renaming it Mannat. The rest as they say is history but the star refuses to sell his first home.

"We have been told that the actor had some great days in this house and it was very lucky for him," said a broker who has been dealing with the star's office.

Being SRK: The ultimate reality TV show

It's a job most Indians would die for — shadowing Shah Rukh Khan wherever he goes. For the last two months, that's exactly what a TV crew has been doing, following the country's biggest star from South Africa to America to London to Mumbai — all for the making of a unique six-part series on the actor, to be telecast on lifestyle channel Discovery Travel & Living. "It's an inner world-outer world kind of documentary," said Khan, speaking exclusively to HT. "Hopefully, the parts that people will get to see of me — at work and at other places — will shed some light on how films and film stars work and offer an insight into how I do things." Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec
