Veer (Kolkata Knight Riders) vs Zaara (Kings XI Punjab): Love in an Indian Premier League Final!

For many a Bollywood fan, the Indian Premier League final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will rekindle memories of the 2004 Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta film Veer Zaara. Some are calling Sunday's contest a 'Bollywood final'.

If you like love stories, you will never want to miss this year's Indian Premier League final. This time, apart from being Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders versus glam doll Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab, the IPL final is also making headlines as the immortalised Veer vs Zaara. What's more? The Veer vs Zaara hashtag is already trending on Twitter and is being used by Twitteratis very frequently along with every IPL talk.

Shah Rukh, whose resurgent Kolkata team will take on Preity's high-flying Punjab in Sunday's final at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium, became known by his character of Veer soon after he and Zinta starred in an award-winning 2004 Bollywood film called Veer Zaara, featuring the latter as Zaara. The movie, which is based on Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh) going to Pakistan to meet his love interest Zaraa Khan (Preity Zinta), takes an unexpected turn when Veer is implicated as a RAW agent and ends up spending 22 years in prison.

Shah Rukh was overjoyed when KKR earned a spot in the IPL 2014 final after beating Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs in the first qualifier. The tournament is one of the most popular sporting events not just in India but across the world.

Shah Rukh's Kolkata Knight Riders have already won the IPL title in 2012. Having won eight games in-a-row this year, the Knights have been unstoppable with Yusuf Pathan getting back to his best and Sunil Narine ruling the roost among the bowlers.

Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, are in the form of their life with Glenn Maxwell hitting bowlers out of the park on almost every ball with his fancy reverse sweeps and scoops. South African star David Miller and Aussie skipper George Bailey have added muscle to the team with their T20 skills.

However, for many Bollywood fans in India, the final will center around Shah Rukh vs Preity Zinta or Veer vs Zaara. Some are also calling it a 'Bollywood final'.

"It's an inner world-outer world kind of documentary," said Khan, speaking exclusively to HT. "Hopefully, the parts that people will get to see of me — at work and at other places — will shed some light on how films and film stars work and offer an insight into how I do things." Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec...
