Shah Rukh Khan made Deepika Padukone learn Tamil

Director Rohit Shetty has earned the reputation of making films — the Golmaal series, Singham (2011) and Bol Bachchan (2012) — that always manage to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark at the box office. For his upcoming movie, Chennai Express,  lead actor Shah Rukh Khan wanted everything done meticulously to ensure another successful project.

For the same reason, he insisted that Deepika Padukone (the film's female lead) perfect her Tamil accent for her role. A source close to Shah Rukh says, "Deepika is Konkani, so she found it easier to learn the Tamil accent, but Shah Rukh still insisted that she work on it." So, before the shoot, he made sure that Deepika watched a lot of Tamil films.

Deepika says, "Working with him is always fun and a learning experience. In this movie, he helped me out with my Tamil accent. He showed me Tamil films and made me hear the accent carefully. This is funny because in Om Shanti Om (OSO; 2007), he was the one who would tease me for my Konkani accent."

Six years ago, OSO, Deepika's debut film, was also the last time that the two actors worked together. Shah Rukh says, "Deepika is a surprise package, and she is going to outdo her own performances (in this film).

It will be a lot of fun, as (much fun as) it was working on it. This is also Rohit's first major love story. This romance is for all age groups." About working with SRK, Rohit says, "The kind of respect he gave me and the kind of faith he has shown in me as an actor and a producer is unbelievable."

"Hopefully, the parts that people will get to see of me — at work and at other places — will shed some light on how films and film stars work and offer an insight into how I do things." Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec...
