Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar among top taxpayers

Mumbai: Bollywood stars seem to be reigning when it comes to filing the income tax returns.
Among celebrities, Shah Rukh Khan is right at the top having paid Rs 34.45 crore last year. Akshay Kumar comes second with Rs 33 crore but is expected to beat SRK this year as he has already paid Rs 4.5 crore in the first six months as compared to SRK`s Rs 3.5 crore.

Shah Rukh and Akshay are followed by Salman at the third spot. The Khan has paid an amount a little over Rs 14 crore last year and Hrithik Roshan is at No 4 having paid Rs 14 crore. Hrithik, however, has already paid Rs 3.5 crore advance tax this year in the first six months, with Salman lagging behind at Rs 2.5 crore in the income projection.

And, who is the surprise entrant into the top league this year? Well, it is none other than Aamir Khan at No 5, who quite interestingly has projected an income much higher than Salman and Hrithik. In fact, with Rs 3.5 crore worth of tax payments paid well in advance in the first half of this year, he is equal only to Shah Rukh.

Recession seems to be not over for these celebrities yet for the income projections of this year are far below their last year`s projected income (going by their advance tax payments for the first half). For example, while SRK had paid Rs 15 crore in the first six months of 2008-09, he has paid only Rs 3.5 crore in the same period this year, similarly Akshay had paid Rs 8 crore last year and he has paid Rs 4.5 crore for the same period this year.

Being SRK: The ultimate reality TV show

It's a job most Indians would die for — shadowing Shah Rukh Khan wherever he goes. For the last two months, that's exactly what a TV crew has been doing, following the country's biggest star from South Africa to America to London to Mumbai — all for the making of a unique six-part series on the actor, to be telecast on lifestyle channel Discovery Travel & Living. "It's an inner world-outer world kind of documentary," said Khan, speaking exclusively to HT. "Hopefully, the parts that people will get to see of me — at work and at other places — will shed some light on how films and film stars work and offer an insight into how I do things." Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec...
