Bebo-Saif replaced SRK-Tabu

Karan Johar had Kurbaan's plot ready way back in 2001. He had named the film Kaal and it had an entirely different star

cast

The soon to be released Kurbaan could have hit the theatres six to seven years ago. Producer Karan Johar had the plot in mind and all the essential details were in place too. The original cast included Shah Rukh Khan, Tabu and Sanjay Dutt and the film was supposed to be directed by Nikhil Advani.

However, due to several undisclosed reasons, Karan could not make the film at that time. He went on to direct Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001 and later produced Kal Ho Naa Ho, which was directed by Nikhil Advani in 2003. Now, almost seven years after Karan first penned the film's plot, his longstanding dream Kurbaan has finally taken shape with Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi in lead roles.

Talking about the film, Karan Johar said, "The story that I had seven years ago (after K3G) was the one I wanted Nikhil Advani to direct with Shah Rukh Khan, Tabu and Sanjay Dutt. Ironically it was called Kaal, which was later the title of the film directed by Soham Shah. The earlier Kaal never got made. After I narrated the story to Rensil, the screenplay that he structured resulted in an altogether different film, Kurbaan. Saif and Kareena were first choice for this film and have become an indispensable part of it."

While the forthcoming film has been written and directed by Rensil D'silva, the story's credit still remains with Karan Johar.

Being SRK: The ultimate reality TV show

It's a job most Indians would die for — shadowing Shah Rukh Khan wherever he goes. For the last two months, that's exactly what a TV crew has been doing, following the country's biggest star from South Africa to America to London to Mumbai — all for the making of a unique six-part series on the actor, to be telecast on lifestyle channel Discovery Travel & Living. "It's an inner world-outer world kind of documentary," said Khan, speaking exclusively to HT. "Hopefully, the parts that people will get to see of me — at work and at other places — will shed some light on how films and film stars work and offer an insight into how I do things." Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec...
