Fox Star studios to distribute Shahrukh Khan film worldwide

United States-based Fox Star Studios Thursday announced a tie-up with Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar to finance and distribute their upcoming film, My Name is Khan, in India and abroad. The film, jointly produced by Khan and Johar, is set against the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and examines their impact on an Indian Muslim living in the United States.
The distribution rights of the film are being billed at between 19 to 21 million dollars, but the producers preferred not to disclose the amount at a press briefing in Mumbai to announce the tie-up, PTI news agency reported. "The financial terms of this deal is an internal matter between Red Chillies, Dharma Productions and Fox. In any case, the figure is nothing close to what is being reported everywhere," Johar was quoted as saying.

"This is the first time such a deal has been inked, where the film will release beyond the mainstream diaspora and that is exciting," he added. Fox Star, a joint venture between 20th Century Fox and Star, would market and distribute the film in India, Fox Searchlight Pictures, which marketed and distributed the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, would release the film in the US, while 20th Century Fox International would distribute the film outside India and the US. The film, which stars Khan and has Kajol, one of India's most successful actresses, as the female lead, has been directed by Johar. Describing the film as one of the most important films he had done, Khan said it was a "passion project."

Khan said he has got to know the crew quite well ("They have been very unobtrusive"). For Discovery Travel & Living, this series will be one of the biggest global productions to come out of India and will be shown all over the world. "We haven't yet decided when we're going to telec...
