Bollywood embraces disability in quest for realism

In contrast, India's popular Hindi-language film industry has traditionally shied away from real-life subjects, preferring flights of fancy on romantic love. But now three major upcoming films are portraying a central character with a disability or illness, marking a shift away from fantasy to treating more contemporary themes. Amitabh Bachchan, 66, stars alongside his son Abhishek, 33, in 'Paa'(Father), out later this year. Their real-life relationship is reversed on screen, with Amitabh playing Abhishek's son. Khan does method acting for autistic role

Karan Johar has revealed that Shah Rukh Khan stayed in character even at home for his role as an autistic man in the director's latest film My Name is Khan . Khan plays a man who unwittingly gets arrested in America because of his surname, an incident mirrored by the actor's recent experience of being detained at Newark Airport. Johar described Khan's character as similar to that of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man . The Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna director also claimed that My Name is Khan has been the most difficult film of his career so far. "It has taken its toll on me and Shah Rukh," he said. "It's true Shah Rukh remained in character as Rizwan Khan even at home. At home in his body language he's always Rizwan. I see him doing it all the time. I don't think he has got out of it. It's celebration time for Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan as Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par have bagged National Awards for the year 2007. Shahrukh Khan's "Fauji- 2" will feature Jackie Shroff's son Tiger

Mumbai: Bollywood's "King Khan" Shahrukh Khan started his career from the small screen with a serial named "Fauji". This serial turned his ways to Bollywood. And now, Shahrukh Khan is planning to get back to his roots again. The serial 'Fauji' was very recognized by the viewers of past days, when Doordarshan was the only channel for entertainment. Now the same serial is going to hit the television sets with a sequel name of 'Fauji- 2' by our King Khan.  This time the serial will be produced by the King Khan's production Red Chillies Idiot Box. Another interesting twist of this upcoming serial Fauji 2 has also been revealed and that the actor Jackie Shroff is going to make his son Tiger, the launch pad in tinsel world. Shah Rukh Khan continues to practice the body language and speech patterns of his autistic character even at  Shahrukh Khan More Pics home.  Before Shah Rukh Khan played the autistic character in My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar met Londoner Chris Aston who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and his wife Maxine, who wrote a book on how to cope with a spouse suffering from the disease.  Says Karan, “Shibani and I met the couple. They were gracious enough to meet us in London. And that couple’s relationship became the basis of Rizwan and Mandira’s relationsip in My Name Is Khan. His career took an impressive turn with this serial. And now, Shah Rukh Khan is going back to his roots. The serial 'Fauji' was well-received by the viewers of bygone days, who had Doordarshan as their only entertainment channel. Now it is coming back as 'Fauji 2' and so is our King Khan. Well, will he able to recreate the magic of the original again? Time will tell… The serial will be handled by the actor's production Red Chilies Idiot Box.
